The Parachuting ApostlesThe Parachuting ApostlesBy Raymond Simon
Considering how young these guys are-and from the looks of the photo gracing the inside of this debut CD all are still under 30-they are wise beyond their years. I say that because the Parachuting Apostles have got the basics down pat: choose a catchy name, keep your songs brief and lively, and don't be afraid to rock out. Comprised of alumni from the Paul Green School of Rock, this quintet turns up the heat immediately with opening number "Limb from Limb," which features crunching guitars and vocals that are unafraid to go for it.
Throughout the record, the rhythm section is tight. (Bassist Jake Dean is a familiar face from World Café Live and drummer Branden King has logged significant playing time with Philly skate punk stalwart, Chuck Treece.) The third number, "Let's Do It (Right This Time)," showcases the band's funky side. An especially nice touch here is the interplay between Domenic Malandro's sax and the drumming. But when you want to rock, it's about guitars, guitars, guitars. To that end, axe-masters Kenny Luu and Louis Graff more than satisfy; this CD has riffs galore and the guitar solos are tasty. Perfect music for driving to the beach.
