Newsworthy: SM2
By John Kerecz
Nothing is more American than family.
But the Mother/Son singers/songwriters team did not always see eye to eye. He was a teenager on a path to self destruction. She was determined to save him while keeping the family together. He left his home under the worst of conditions to pull his life together. She stayed behind to pick up the pieces of a shattered family, always believing that love would find a way. Through chaos, drama, and tough love, eventually they found clarity and forgiveness. It was the music that brought them back together, healed the wounds of the past, and created an unbreakable bond. Now they are bound by a common purpose: to create awesome music.
SM2 is a fusion of both the mother and son styles, which gives a little of what they each want, and this shows on their newly released first CD.
Sherri laughed when I asked how Shane felt coming out from under her shadow all those years she was performing solo. "Shane has never really been 'under my shadow,'" she says. "In fact, he is the reason I picked up a guitar. I took him to lessons when he was 12-years-old, and I secretly played his guitar when he was not home trying to keep up with the stuff he was learning at lessons. Finally, I got up the courage to ask my hubby if he'd pay for lessons for me. If it were not for my son Shane, I would never have played guitar, never have met Dave Kelly, his teacher, who has been a real staple in my music career for eight years, and never would have quit my day job to become a full time musician. So I think it's me who came out from under his shadow." Sherri then takes a quick breath and blurts out like a proud mother: "He is an awesome guitar player."

Shane formed his previous project the Tangello Blue band years ago when he was still in high school. Growing up with a hardcore singer/songwriter mom, it was only natural for Shane to migrate toward music.
When asked about about Tangello Blue and his present SM2 success, Shane responds, "It's not about success, fame, or money. It's about the music. I enjoy making music and where it takes me. Really, I would just like to play with great people maybe be like the Beatles or the Stones and just make and play great music 'til I die."
