Cake is a rock band, one that is best found through Google searches when you include "the band" after their name.
It's pretty subdued at Milkboy Coffee the night Rachel Platten comes to town.
On a damp fall Monday night at Philly Rising, a packed, yet well-organized open mic night at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, the Josh and Pete Band are set to go on at 10pm, in the Lightning Round.
The Absolute Zeros are familiar with change. Since British frontman, Kelvin Cochrane, and North Philly percussionist, Sabu Rex, formed the group in 2007, they've experienced quite a few lineup changes. After the unexpected death of Sabu in 2008, they decided to keep going in his memory.
"I often refer to the music of The Bailey Hounds as 'cemetery blues'," says Ryan Petrillo, the band's lead singer and principal lyricist. "I'd like to imagine all these songs being sung in the failing light of a neglected graveyard."
"We'll all be gardening on rooftops and we'll have to know jujitsu to defend our lives," she tells me within our first minute of conversation.
"We'll be your wrecking ball tonight!" Alex Levine of the So So Glos is fond of proclaiming at live shows, followed immediately by an imperative to "get up on your feet!"
Never let the words "I just learned this today so it might be a train wreck" escape your mouth while you're on stage. NEVER.
