At the turn of the century, when the world was concerned with losing their fortunes to Y2K and intrigued by the idea of flying cars, Anthony Caroto was pre-occupied with the creation of an honest and interesting monthly music magazine. In a community overflowing with local talent, there was a need for a media vessel to bring it to the forefront. In December of 2001 Caroto released the first issue of Origivation magazine, generously providing for such needs by giving original Philadelphia acts a range of exposure, the scope of which they had never seen.
In 2006, after publishing 50 issues and becoming a fixture of the Philly music community, Caroto decided his work was done and, much like our forefathers, went west to preach the gospel of local music pride. He left the future of Origivation in the willing and capable hands of entrepreneur, Brian Cronin, who promoted Caroto’s number one field journalist, Kevin Laibson, to take over as the editor. Cronin then immediately expanded the magazine’s circulation and distribution by 35%.
A year later, Laibson decided it was time to hang up his editor’s cap and go north, leaving Dominic Nicosia to take over as managing editor. Nicosia had spent years writing for music publications across the east coast and was eager to fill Laibson’s shoes. Since the shift of ownership, Origivation has remained focused on loyalty and fidelity to the local community, while expanding areas of coverage to national acts. Years after its inception, Origivation has become a formidable ally of all local artists and will continue to provide opportunities for all quality acts to expand their audience while giving people something more to read than snobbish reviews and tragically-hip pop-culture commentary.
